Hutchinson Health Welcomes Two New Physicians

Dr. Kathleen Byron and Dr. Jalayna Smith are glad to call Hutchinson home, but both are quite familiar with this area already.

If Dr. Byron’s name sounds a little familiar, it is! Dr. David Byron is Dr. Kathleen Byron’s uncle. With family ties here in Hutchinson, Dr. Kathleen Byron is settling right in. She and her husband Josh have found a home north of town on 20 acres of land where they plan to enjoy a hobby farm of chickens, goats, and vegetable gardens. She also enjoys yoga, running, and biking.

Dr. Kathleen Byron, MD, is a family physician with a special interest in Obstetrics, Women’s Health, and Dermatology. Dr. Byron loves holistic medicine and working with people of all ages. She is particularly adept at providing care for families going through difficult situations. “Working at Hutchinson Health will allow me to get to know my patients and follow their needs closely, so I can offer care and support when they need it most.”

Dr. Jalayna Smith, MD, born and raised in Litchfield, MN, is also excited to be close to family. Dr. Smith and her husband Dan recently welcomed their first child, Charlotte into their lives. They moved into their new home in Hutchinson and are happy with the enthusiastic welcome so many have extended. Feel free to give them a wave when you see them out for a walk with their yellow lab, Bella.

Dr. Smith is a family physician with special interest in Preventive Medicine, Obstetrics, and Infants & Children. She loves caring for her patients through all stages of life, and considers it most rewarding to be able to deliver infants and then continue to see them and their families throughout the years. “The most rewarding part of my job is helping patients be healthy and feel good! Whether it’s treating an acute illness or helping prevent or manage chronic disease, I enjoy working together with patients to help them feel their best.”

Dr. Byron and Dr. Smith met while completing their residency at United Family Medicine in St. Paul. We’re not so sure it’s a coincidence they both felt Hutchinson Health felt like the best fit. Their exuberant outlook on healthcare and life in general, is a perfect match as we work toward Advancing Health With Our Community.

What You Need to Know About Shingles

remple2104Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox.  The virus can remain dormant in a nerve root, but when reactivated, it causes shingles.

The Shingles Vaccine

The shingles vaccine is approved for adults age 50 and older.  It is recommended by the CDC for adults age 60 and over.  Even if you have previously had shingles, you could get shingles again and are eligible for the vaccine.

The vaccine reduces the risk of shingles, but is not fool-proof.  Even if it fails to prevent the condition, it may help to decrease the severity and duration of symptoms.  The vaccine is given as a single injection in the upper arm.

The most common side effects are localized inflammation and headaches.  People who are immune-suppressed or taking immunosuppressive drugs should not get the vaccine.  Also, those allergic to neomycin, those with an active tuberculosis infection and pregnant women should not be vaccinated.

Nature’s Bounty

The Hutchinson Farmers Market is still loaded with a bounty of fresh, local produce and other goodies.  If you haven’t been to the market this season, there is still plenty of time left and even plenty more to choose from.

Heart of Hutch will have one more Food Tasting on Saturday, October 18th from 8-12pm.  Sample one of these recipe ideas from September with your family this week.
