Hutchinson Health Nurse Receives Award

Jen Miller, a registered nurse at Hutchinson Health, was recently recognized by the Minnesota Hospital Association with its quarterly “Good Catch for Patient Safety Award.”

The award recognizes hospital staff whose actions help identify a patient safety issue, and prevent patient harm.

In Miller’s case, she was in a team meeting with a hospitalist who mentioned that the plan for a patient was to await a test result before determining future care. Miller questioned whether the test had been ordered and upon further investigation, discovered that it had not. She informed the physician, the test was ordered, and the patient had a good outcome.

“In a situation like this, a staff nurse could assume the physician knew what was happening, and in any case, it was their responsibility,” noted Dr. Steven Mulder, president and CEO of Hutchinson Health. “Jen knew that patient safety is the responsibility of all, and she made it her business to investigate and speak up.”

Miller has more than 15 years of experience as a registered nurse. She has been with Hutchinson Health since 2005, and currently serves in the medical/surgical unit.

“I like taking care of people,” Miller said. “It’s important that when people come into the hospital, they get the care they deserve. I treat them how I would want to be treated.”

Mulder noted that it is an honor to have Miller recognized with this award. “I know many of our staff have the same commitment and would have done the same,” he added.
