Wellness Wisdom for the New Year

Registered Nutrition and Dietetic Technician Peg Christenson
I’m Peg Christenson, Registered Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, at Hutchinson Health with Wellness Wisdom.

Are you ready to make small healthy changes to your lifestyle? The idea is to change one small thing each month and then keep that accomplishment and add on to it the next month. For example, start with one thing you want to change in January; let’s say it’s getting more fiber in your diet. Then in February add another goal but still keep up what you started in January.

Set realistic and specific goals and start small. Incorporate SMART changes: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Lined. It’s not enough to say “I want to eat healthier”, it needs to be something such as “I will eat a serving of high fiber cereal, three days a week, starting January 8th.” After about three weeks to a month this new goal becomes a habit and you can layer another goal at that point. For more ideas see the Resolution Calendar at the link below.
